Overview

Bioprocessing is defined as the production of value-added materials from living sources. Bioprocesses harness a diverse array of biological components including microbial, animal, plant, and fungal cells, as well as enzymes, to act as catalysts or source materials in industrially important chemical production, including pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals derived from living organisms include small molecule drugs, recombinant proteins, tissues, cells, genes, allergens, blood components, and vaccines. Orbiton-BioRASA provides hands-on experience in planning, designing, executing, and characterizing bioprocesses to achieve target molecules in the laboratory. Participants gain the ability to independently plan and conduct bioprocesses on a laboratory scale. The curriculum also covers essential safety protocols for chemical handling, training in literature search, techniques for processing analytical data and structural identification, and the importance of accurate record-keeping.

  • Introduction to “Bioprocess Technology” related Laboratory Equipment and instruments, provision to teach theoretical concepts.
  • Hands-on experience of working with micro-organisms, media preparation, buffer preparation, sterilization and decontamination systems.
  • Upstream processing, fermenters or bioreactors ranging from lab to pilot scale capacities.
  • Downstream processing, cell harvesting, filtration, concentrating molecule using rotavap.
  • Product Characterization: Ion- exchange chromatography, TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography), Bio-chemical estimation, HPLC, NMR etc.
  • Record keeping and data interpretation.
